The trek also includes a hike up to Gokyo Ri, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan range. The Gokyo Valley Trek is a great alternative to famous Everest Base Camp Trek. Both of the trek offers equally stunning views of the mountain vistas. But this trek is relatively quieter with less crowded than EBC Trek.
The trek starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, from where you will trek through traditional Sherpa villages, alpine meadows, and dense forests, before reaching the serene Gokyo Valley. The best time for the Gokyo Valley Trek in Nepal is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. Both of these seasons have favorable weather conditions for trekking in Nepal. However, we give you more information regarding both of these seasons for this trek:
Spring (March to May):
Spring is a popular time for trekking in the Gokyo Valley due to its warm weather and moderate temperature. The days are generally warm and pleasant, making it comfortable for trekking. The skies are often clear, providing excellent views of the surrounding mountains. However, it is also a busy season from trekking. The trail gets busy as the spring season approaches.
Autumn (September to November):
Autumn is another peak season for the Gokyo Valley Trek. The weather is stable, with mild temperatures during the day. However, during the night, temperature is a bit cool and chilly. The skies are typically clear during the day, offering panoramic views of the mountains. The months of autumn season also bring post-monsoon greenery to the landscapes, enhancing the overall beauty of the trek. Additionally, the trail is less crowded compared to spring season.
Both seasons have their specialty, and the choice between them depends on your personal preferences. If you enjoy trekking in lively environment with vibrant flora, spring is the best time. However, if you want to trek in quieter trails and pleasant weather, autumn might be the best option. Generally, these two seasons are the best time for any trekking in Nepal. Day 01: Kathmandu to Lukla flight and trek to Toktok (2760 meters, 3-4 hours)
The journey begins with a 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. After reaching Lukla, you will have short tea break and begin your trek. The route is mixed with lot of uphill and downhills. Along the way, you will see many stone paved colorful hamlets. Likewise, you will be crossing first suspension bridge of the trek as well. Overnight stay at Toktok.
Day 02: Trek to Namche (3440 meters, 5-6 hours)
After having breakfast at toktok, we will head to Namche. The trail goes through the dense forest of rhododendron. Likewise, before reaching Namche, you will have to climb a tricky uphill. Namche is a beautiful Himalayan town in Khumbu. You can find beautiful cafes, bakery, restaurant, gear shop, etc. Overnight stay at Namche.
Day 03: Acclimatization at Namche
After walking above 3000 meteres, acclimatization is very necessary. Today you will do short hike of 2-3 hours to make your body acclimatize in higher altitude. Either you can hike to Syangboche or hike to Everest view hotel. Likewise, visiting Sherpa Museum at Namche Bazaar gives you more historical information about Namche bazaar and Khumbu region. Therefore, covering some distance today will give you extra help in adapting in higher altitude. Overnight stay at Namche.
Day 04: Trek to Phorche Thanga (3680 meters, 4-5 hours)
The trek continues to Phorche Thanga through several ascent and descent. Likewise, we will pass through lush forests of rhododendron and beautiful sherpa villages. Overnight stay at Porche Thangna.
Day 05: Trek to Macchermo (4150 meters, 6-7 hours)
We will head to Machhermo today starting to trek towards North. The trail leads us through stunning landscapes, lush forests, and small sherpa settlements. We will have to ascent more as we approach towards Macchermo. At the same time, enjoy the amazing views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kangtega during the trek. Overnight stay at Macchermo.
Day 06: Trek to Gokyo (4750 meters, 4-5 hours)
The trek to Gokyo is an exciting part of today. We will follow the trail of Pagnka and climb down following a river. The river flows down to the west of Ngozumpa Glacier. Likewise, we will climb an incline steep rock to the valley and pass through first holy lake of Gokyo Valley. Overnight stay at Gokyo valley.
Day 07: Acclimatization at Gokyo
Today is acclimatization day at Gokyo valley. You can just roam around the valley and explore the serene beauty of this valley. You have an option to hike to the Fifth lake of the valley via fourth lake, to make your body moving during the day. Remaining idle whole day is not recommended. So, you can just explore around or Hike for 2-3 hours. Overnight stay at Gokyo.
Day 08: Hike to Gokyo Ri (5484 meters) and Trek to Dole via Macchermo (4-5 Hours)
The day begins with the beautiful hike to Gokyo Ri. The Ri is just above the Gokyo Villages. We leave early in the morning following the steep path up to the Hillside. As you approach near Gokyo Ri, beautiful views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse and Makalu are on sight from distance. Likewise, the views of tha Gokyo valley itself is mesmerizing from the top of the ridge. After enjoying the views from the Ri, we will climb down to village, take a lunch and walk to Dole via Macchhermo. Overnight stay at Dole.
Day 09: Trek to Namche (3440 meters, 5-6 hours)
We will gently descend down from Doleand head to Phorche Thangna. The trail passes through the forest of rhododendron trees. Likewise, trek continues ascending via Mongla Danda and again descend down to Kyanjoma. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.
Day 10: Trek to Lukla (2860 meters, 5-6 Hours)
The last day of your trek will be from Namche to Lukla Via Munjo. There are few ascending before we trek down to Dudh Koshi River. Similarly, the trail continues through small Sherpa settlements and tea houses to Lukla. Overnight stay at Lukla.
Day 11: Fly back Kathmandu
The trek to Gokyo valley ends today, as we leave Khumbu Region behind and fly back Kathmandu.
